Firefighters responded to a building at 157 Lawrence Street on the morning of Thursday, Dec. 15, the Lawrence Fire Department confirmed to Daily Voice.
Seven people from the building's first-floor restaurant, "Pollo Ciba," had to be evaluated, as well as four people from the building's third-floor residential area, because of a carbon monoxide leak, reported WHDH.
A furnace and faulty stove were determined to be the cause of the leak, reported WHDH. The building lacked proper carbon monoxide and smoke detectors.
The restaurant remained closed after the incident, but some residents were cleared to return to their homes, the outlet continued.
Eleven total people were hospitalized, with five transported to Lawrence General Hospital and six taken to Holy Family Hospital in Methuen, WHDH reported.
One of the hospitalized children, believed to be between 10 and 11 years old, and one adult may require pure oxygen treatments in a hyperbaric chamber to recover, a nursing supervisor at Lawrence General told WHDH. This treatment could mean that the patients may be transferred to medical facilities in Boston.
